Mystery Jets - Young Love (feat. Laura Marling)

The Jets were indeed a mystery to me, until my Gentle Wave obsession with covers led me to this gem.

Photobucket

Apart from the gorgeous rendition of Leona Lewis' Bleeding Love that you just heard -hint, hint: click the link!- the Mystery Jets have been making sweet music since 2005. They released their third album (or second if you don't live in the U.S.), entitled 'Twenty One' in 2008.

For the first single, guitarist William Rees took over the vocals and singer/songwriter Laura Marling lent her tender, lovely accented voice and the British Debbie Harry visual vibe she's got going.

Let the brilliant video put some colour in your day, while we wait and see what they've got in store for 2009...

Asobi Seksu - Me & Mary

Their name means "casual sex" in Japanese slang and their music would make a lovely soundtrack for the act itself.

mary

After their self-titled debut in 2004, Asobi Seksu graced audiences with their 2006 offering 'Citrus'. Their music is currently gaining mainstream popularity, being featured extensively on British series Skins.

With new album 'Hush' out February 17, there's gonna be a lot of Seksu-y music to go around. To ease us in, let's enjoy their first two-tone video offering for the lead single.

Enjoy, as Pitchfork Media puts it, the "waves of shoegaze distortion layered over sugary indie-pop melodies":

Röyksopp 's WEBSITE ONLINE

Röyksopp just uploaded their brand new website with lots of news about their forthcoming album "Junior" but also the best of their past.

CHECK IT OUT

Plastique Noir

Plastique Noir was formed at the end of 2005 by ex-members of underground bands from Fortaleza/CE/Brazil. Tired of their static scene's limited horizons (ie. heavy metal and hardcore), Airton S. Nepomuceno, Marcio Benevides, Danyel Fernandes and Max Bernardo decided to take advantage of the post-punk revival and prove that Brazil isn't just about football and samba (oh, I forgot G-strings).

Aided in this effort by fifth member Sister Hurricane, an old drum machine SR-16 (any relation to Doktor Avalanche?), Plastique Noir brings back the gothic rock/darkwave from the 80's and 90's, but always with a contemporary approach which adds elements of death rock, industrial, ethereal, new romantic, punk rock and even electro. Unique in Fortaleza, Plastique Noir (black plastic, in french) embraces the name of the bag used to store dead bodies in morgues. The music, gloomy yet danceable, is the perfect companion to Nepomuceno's ravings about myths and horror, morbidness, melancholia and madness created by the conflict of the infinite passions proper to the human existential labyrinth.

All of Plastique Noir's independent releases so far - Offering (demo debut 2006), Urban Requiems (promo EP 2006/2007), Those Who Walk By The Night (The Remixes) (promo EP 2008) and Dead Pop (album 2008) - are available as FREE downloads from the band's website. So, if you are fans of She Wants Revenge, Joy Division, The Sisters Of Mercy, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Bauhaus etc. give these Brazilians a listen. I ensure you, this is NOT carnival music!

Plastique Noir - Shadowrun (free download)

He has also produced and remixed artists as diverse as Bjork, REM, Quincy Jones, John Cale, Yoko Ono, Dizzee Rascal and Roisin Murphy.

Matthew Herbert's dazzling new album "There's Me and There's You" is the most seductive, sophisticated and subversive collection of protest songs ever recorded. Blending lush jazz instrumentation, soulful vocals, fascinating rhythms and a secret undergound arsenal of outlandish samples, it marks Herbert's second collaboration with his big band.

Mikhail Karikis

Mikhail Karikis is a Greek-born artist who has been London-based since the early ‘90s.

"I grew up in the noisy port-town of Thessaloniki, buzzing with immigrants from all around the Balkans, our neighboring Middle East, other fellow Eastern European countries and Africa, street music, costumes, and of course ship-horns! That was just about the most exciting thing then in an otherwise conservative country. Coming from a working class, uneducated family, I was always fascinated by the ‘other side’: books, poetry, experimental and classical music, avant-garde design, ancient Greek tragedy… only the journey to discovering all this was quite long and not that straight forward. I studied classical music, then architecture with experimental group Archigram; then followed my art studies at the Slade School in London. Funnily enough, it was at art-school that I discovered my voice; literally, I began making voice sculptures."

You might have listened to his strong and mysterious, classical and expeimental voice once when listening to Bjork's Army of Me or when visiting to see the upcoming season's clothing lines shown on the catwalk at collections or when accidentally to view his music clips at YouTube. As feeling Mikhail Karikis's voice, many of you must have been taken into a deep place where you have never been to.

His latest collaborative album, MORPHICA, is about to be released.

White Lies

2009 began rather well, with West London's post-punk trio White Lies debut setting the bar really high for all newcomers. Formed from the ashes of A Fear Of Flying in late 2007, 20-year olds Harry McVeigh (singer/guitarist), Charles Cave (bassist/lyricist) and Jack Brown (drummer) wear black and write songs with names such as Death and To Lose My Life. Fear not though as they're not your run-of-the-mill goth miserablists, these lads have way bigger plans.

Their music might sound depressing to some (Katy Perry it ain't), but at the same time it's really uplifting. Think of a gothic Killers with ice-cold synths, anthemic guitars and equally powerful vocals that will leave you reaching for the replay button before the last chord has ended. As for their gloomy, morbidly macabre lyrics... well, they'll definitely leave a smirk on Robert Smith's smudged lips, not to mention Nick Cave's.

White Lies' dark pop brings back memories of 80's post-punk icons Joy Division and Echo and the Bunneymen, updated for the 21st century. Although naysayers might call them Interpol (or Editors) copycats, this is hardly the case as White Lies effectively blend their influences into a unique sound. Their debut fittingly entitled "To Lose My Life" is out this month, covering the usual epic themes of love, betrayal, death and mortality. It's a dark album filled with hauntingly outstanding tracks, all potential singles (you won't find any stinkers here) that will leave you asking for more. It's not hard to imagine a packed stadium chanting "let's grow old together and die at the same time"... 2009 belongs to them! Visit White Lies on Myspace to listen to their ace new single To Lose My Life.

X-Wife

Formed in 2002 by João Vieira (vocals/guitar), Fernando Sousa (bass) and Rui Maia (Synthesizers/ drums/drum machine), Portuguese X-Wife set their world-class standard early on: "Rockin’ Rio" (2003), their debut EP, was a real "stone in the pond", introducing a band building on a post-punk inheritance from bands like Suicide or Gang of Four, managing to consolidate avast modern lexicon that was already very much their own, where distortion and analogue electronics from a vintage drum machine served an ambitious, well informed song writing style.

"Feeding the machine" (2004), the first full length album, confirmed and furthered the expectations generated by "Rockin’ Rio", receiving international acclaim and praise from LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. Their second album, "Side Effects" (2006), licensed in Spain by Pupilo Records, showed the work of a band that continuously strives to improve, where the drum machine gave way to live drums.

Last September saw the released of their third and best effort so far. "Are You Ready For The Blackout?" is a record in which X-Wife assert themselves with a musical language and sound that is all their own, with a unique aesthetic coherence that is both modern and timeless. So if your iPod is filled with tunes by CSS, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture or DFA 1979 make sure to visit X-Wife on Myspace.

Le Corps Mince de Françoise

Le Corps Mince de Françoise means "The Skinny Body of France" and is a proud Finnish lady trio.

"Bitch Of The Bitches" is about the game of relationships. It fitted very well to combine the theme of jungle, war paintings and the jungles law etc. to the video. It's a kind of going to war thing...relationships. The video also shows the childish play with post it stickies and a rocking horse which symbolizes playing with feelings. "Bitch Of The Bitches" is cool and energetic cause the girl is reckless and cares only about herself. So the bottom line is: why does it have to be so fucking hard to just hook up?

Telefon Tel Aviv

Telefon Tel Aviv are Joshua Eustis and Charles Cooper.

In 2008 they announced with this very nice idea:

that they finished recording their new LP.

Well, they have signed to Ellen Allien's BPITCH CONTROL label and their new LP "Immolate Yourself" will be released on January 20th.

Yesterday they uploaded the following video, just to give us a taste of what we are going to listen and watch from them in a few days.
