Archive

Archive are an "electronic rock" band, originating from London, UK. They were formed from the ashes of UK breakbeat act Genaside II by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths in 1994 and began as an electronica project, combining dark, Bristol-style soundscapes (Massive Attack, Portishead) with rap. The band's debut, Londinium, was released in 1996 with Roya Arab and Rosko John as guest vocalists and received moderate critical acclaim. However, 1999's sophomore Take My Head (with new guest vocalist Suzanne Wooder) marked a departure from trip-hop and a lean towards a poppier and more melodic sound. Unfortunately, their record company didn't seem to like Archive's new musical ventures and decided to drop them.

After more changes in the lineup, the band hit its stride on album No.3 You All Look The Same To Me (2002), featuring singer Craig Walker. This time Archive took a decided turn towards more progressive music (with some Progressive Rock influences, notably Pink Floyd whose indelible influence is audible on tracks such as ‘Finding it so Hard’ and ‘Again’), while still maintaining electronic elements. The band saw growing popularity and critical acclaim, especially in France, Greece, Germany and Poland.

After recording two more artistically -but not too commercially- successful albums, Michel Vaillant (2003) and Noise (2004), Walker left the band and the project continued on as a Collective with new vocalists Pollard Berrier and Dave Peny. 2006 saw the release of Lights, followed by Live at Paris Zenith (2007), "the best live album ever made" according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Archive have just released their much anticipated record Controlling Crowds, which has already been deemed "their greatest and most unparalleled" work to date. You can get it from Amazon France, but you can also listen to it in full from the band's MySpace.

Cicada

Cicada is an electronic indie-dance band comprising Aaron Gilbert (also known as Mr Natural), Alex Payne, and Icelandic vocalist, Heidrun Bjornsdottir (formerly of Gloss and 4AD's Gus Gus). Their sound is catchy & direct - electronic pop with a touch of rock 'n' roll balls. To get the picture imagine Blondie jamming with Can, New Order and The Sugarcubes, The Cocteau Twins and Slowdive adding the sonics, with Daft Punk and Quincy Jones at the controls of Paisley Parks mixing desk.

Utilising live instruments and old skool synths, Cicada have turned into one of the most talked about electronic bands in the UK. Their remixing skills are also worth mentioning, with bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, Editors and 13 Senses seeking their help. Following the success of their self-titled debut (2006), Cicada are about to release their sophomore album Roulette on 25 May 2009 through Critical Mass, preceded by the single Metropolis on 18 May 2009.

The Exploding Boy

The Exploding Boy were formed by Swedes Johan Sjöblom and Les Andersson in January 2006. Sharing a similar taste in music (The Cure, The Chameleons, B-Movie, Magazine, My Bloody Valentine, Shed Seven), the duo discovered that their musical ideas, visions and experiences were complementing each other perfectly and during the next two months they wrote and recorded ten songs in Lars home based studio.

In the following year the band recruited more members and finally released their self-titled debut album. The Exploding Boy is a dark but melodic - kind of Interpol meets The Cure - record, especially suited for gloomy days. 2008 found the band back in the studio, working on their sophomore record. Afterglow is due for release this May, spearheaded by singles 40 Days and London.

Black Room

Remember Lorraine? A few years ago, three Norwegians got together over a common passion for moody pop, electronic sounds and live performances, making their own musical universe. Mixing catchy melodies with influences from more beat-oriented music is their trademark, lead singer Ole, synthman Paal and guitarist Anders released a bunch of catchy tunes (Transatlantic Flight anyone?) and kept us asking for more. However, time passed without any news from the band. Until now, that is.

For reasons unknown the trio renamed themselves Black Room and finally released a record. By calling it Pop Noir, they pretty much summarize their own sound in two words. You should expect a crossover of Depeche Mode, a-ha, Duran Duran, Pet Shop Boys and New Order with more guitars added to the mix. The album is currently available on iTunes (US - UK), but if you are old school and prefer the physical version with the bonus tracks and all, you can order it from HMV Japan here. Let's just hope that it will get a proper release and we won't have to learn Japanese in order to buy it! For musical tasters, tour-dates, pictures and other information about the band visit Black Room's MySpace page.

Tracklist:
  1. I Feel It
  2. When I Return To The World
  3. Saved

  7. A Life Less Ordinary
  8. Heaven
  9. A Million Colors

From Russia With Love: Punk TV

It would not be an overstatement to say that Punk TV were the most-talked-about independent band of 2007 in Russia. Originally from Siberia, Punk TV formed in early 2004 by three friends and musicians (Alex, Volodya and Kostya), before relocating to Moscow two years later. The band's discography spans over 4 years with 2 full-length releases, a 2005 debut (Punk TV) and a follow-up in 2007 (Music For The Broken Keys).

Punk TV promptly grabbed the attention of Russian music press who did not hesitate to call them "the best indie-band of the country". Their sound is soft, yet at the same time dynamic, with diffused chord structures and melodies of electronic romanticism - a mixture of air and movement with guitar riffs, solid rhythm, and infectious vocals. During the four years of Punk TV's existence critics compared their sound to My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and Joy Division. Influences aside, having performing live at several major Russian and European festivals the band was dubbed as the "Russian Chemical Brothers."

Loverdrive is Punk TV's latest offering and it's the perfect combination of effervescent dance beats, driving, droning guitars, shoegaze harmonies and new wave aesthetics. If you're a fan of New Order, Ride, The Charlatans and even The Cure, you won't need to get hammered with Vodka in order to dance. Spasiba Punk TV!

Phoenix

Formed in 1997, Phoenix, a hip foursome from the chic Paris suburb of Versailles, became an underground hit with the loungy, mellow and unpretentious sound heard on their 2000 debut album United. Even before the album was officially released, several tracks were already spinning on DJ turntables, taking club dancefloors across the U.K., the U.S. and Europe by storm. However, the group’s album received a frosty welcome back home, with French critics dismissing the band as "little rich kids" who made "wallpaper pop" "Californian music".

Instead of giving up though, the group spent the next two years touring on the international circuit, thus earning a new following of fans abroad. These included Sofia Coppola, who used a track by Phoenix on the soundtrack of her film "Lost in Translation" (Thomas Mars, the band's frontman, is also her companion).

Alphabetical, the band's second outing, was released in 2004 and this time round met with a much more positive reception in France, as did album No.3 It's Never Been Like That. The group’s heady cocktail of rock, pop, electro, hip-hop, folk and funk, not only seduced the critics but scored a hit with the record-buying public, too.

Now Phoenix are back with their 4th studio album, due for release on May 25th 2009. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a brilliant record that combines upbeat indie rock with lush synths and catchy choruses. 1901 is the first single and it's available as a free download from the band's official site at http://www.wearephoenix.com. Check it out and see for yourself why this could probably be the best album of their career so far...

The Race

The Race is a UK band which has got very good reviews lately.

"Akin to Editors, Interpol and White Lies....Floor-tom heavy with a rolling bass the guitars are alternatively choppy then floating on a Chameleons-like tide of echoing, chiming, glassy effects." Q

Saint Patrick's New Face

Patrick Wolf uploaded his new video for the song "Vulture".

It's the first single from the forthcoming album "Battle".

NEW SOUND, NEW STYLING, NEW IMAGE, NEW CHARACTER.

Patrick Wolf presents us a totally new attitude, which is already very promising.

JOIN THE TRIBE, PREPARE FOR BATTLE WITH PATRICK WOLF

Press: "Patrick Wolf is 25 years-old, a gifted songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and possessor of a powerful, expressive, and unique voice. He has already released three critically acclaimed albums that have brought him a devoted cult following the world over. The first album, released when Patrick was barely 18, Lycanthropy, saw him dubbed the leading light of the blink and you miss it genre, folktronica. His second, Wind In The Wires, a darker, more introspective record than the first, was recorded in a week for £450. His last album, Magic Position, saw Patrick tour the world for the first time, selling out shows all over the UK, US, across Europe, Australia, and Japan, while blowing away festival audiences with his mix of outrageous showmanship, amazing musicianship, and powerful, soaring vocals. He has just completed work on his next album, Battle, a more mature, expressive work than anything he has hitherto recorded, featuring guest appearances and collaborations with Alec Empire, Eliza Carthy, and the actress Tilda Swinton amongst others. Patrick has decided to release Battle on his own label Bloody Chamber Music. His representatives are seeking to license the album outside the UK."

The Red Crayon Aristocrat Club

The Red Crayon Aristocrat Club is born from a fire party in a winter night, when Spaniards Hélène and H. Zombie, looking for the sense of their life, established the foundations of a club and music for dreamers. Their aim: tell the world stories where beautiful things are cruel, truths are lies and everything is turned upside down. Don't lose the path and follow the guide, only the aristocrats are going to tell you the truth, the one that you will be able to see if you believe in magic…

Their spiritual leaders - Ladytron, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Raveonettes, Joy Division - guided them by the obtuse way of music, mixing synthpop, new wave, post punk, garage… And the aristocrats locked themselves in their very own world to write the manifest of their club in the way of songs. Shortly after, their first EP saw the light on Zorch Factory Record music label, shortly followed by the Stories of Cruelty and Beauty EP. You can download both EP's for FREE here. Highly recommended for fans of Client and Sohodolls, too!

Blume

Formed in September 2008, Blume is an idea of Enrico Filisetti, Ivan Savino and Daniele de Fabritiis, who decided to join their strength and creativity in this brand new project. Blume is a synthpop band with an impressive Darkwave nuance as far as the sound is concerned, while its lyrics take their influences from far and wide: European Romanticism, decadent poets and philosophers can all be heard throughout its music.

The Italian trio captures the early 80's New Wave style and principles, to join what is the nowadays Alternative Electronic scene. Signed to prestigious American label A Different Drum, the band will release their debut album Rise From Grey in September 2009. A note to all of you Depeche Mode fans out there: watch these guys, they certainly have potential!

Liam And Me

Since 2004, Philly-based rock band Liam and Me has been working to create perfect pop songs. They’re the kind of musicians who love a great hook paired with a great arrangement, big hits with a sense of music history. So far they’ve toured the US with their catalogue of hot dance tracks and cruising anthems with an overwhelmingly positive response and major label attention.

Taking cues from synth rock pioneers, classic pop song writers, and contemporary indie rock, Liam and Me hit the studio this year with producers Wired All Wrong (Hellogoodbye, White Tie Affair, Beck) and mixer Mark Endert (Maroon 5, The Fray, Fiona Apple). Their eagerly awaited debut will hit the stores sometime in 2009, pleasing fans of Shiny Toy Guns, Your Vegas, Kill Hannah or The Sounds. Visit the band's MySpace to get a taste of their new single Say It Loud, available now on iTunes.

Juliette's New Project

In 2004, Juliette Lewis the punk rocker emerged with a bang. Now she's being reborn as a musical force in the studio as well as onstage. After four years, two full-length albums and countless high-profile tours and festival gigs alongside acts like the Killers, Foo Fighters, Muse and Chris Cornell with her roaring rock road show the Licks, Lewis is ready to unveil her new project: Juliette and the New Romantiques.

With the Licks, Lewis put out the 2004 EP … Like a Bolt of Lightning, which was followed by the full-length You're Speaking My Language. By the time 2006's Four on the Floor was released, the Licks had mounted their international assault, touring the world and rocking fests like Iceland Airwaves and the U.K.'s prestigious V Festival and Leeds & Reading as well as Lallapalooza. And Juliette's time on the road is far from over: tour dates with the New Romantiques will be announced shortly after the release of their debut album: Terra Incognita.

Black Poets

With a passing visual resemblance to 1950/1960s British rockers meets modern day New York vintage throwaways, Black Poets brings with them the appeal of boys in leather jackets, playing soaring early 80's style new wave with guitars. And having cut the record almost entirely using 70's and 80's analogue technology to remain authentic has given Black Poets some personal originality. Their music interweaves the darkness of 80's post-punk and new wave with traditional early 1980's New York City dance music in places, Interpol/She Wants Revenge/Editors style vocals and conceptual monotone and soaring guitars.

Although there is no doubt the New York sound forms a massive influence on the band, so is it true of melodic alt outfits such as Sweden’s Logh and Kansas’ The Appleseed Cast but with an edge of the sparkle of 80's British acts like Kitchens of Distinction and The Smiths. The debut album "Innocents And Thieves" will be released in May and was produced and engineered by Pete Abbott (engineer Editors/Guillemots/Athlete/Spiritualized) and mastered by John Davis (White Lies/Bloc Party/Kaiser Chiefs).

The guys are also offering their two singles, Mistakes and Point Of Reason, as FREE downloads from their MySpace page. Give them a listen before they become the new hype!

DIN [A] TOD

DIN [A] is the phrase for "German Industrial Standard", a standard used for for example paper sizes and any other industrial product. Tod means, well, "death"... DIN [A] Tod explores the contrast between a System and that which cannot be measured at all - death. It also happens to be the name of a Berlin-based minimal electro band consisting of Sven Claussen and Claudia Fasold.

Strongly influenced by the cold wave from the Eighties, t
he duo released their refreshing debut The Sound Of Crash two years ago under critical acclaim and now they're back with their sophomore effort, Westwerk. The new album fuses the spirit of modernized post-punk with the amiable madness of the electroclash sound from Germany’s capital, resulting in a versatile No-Future-Pop music experience with a profound club appeal. The songs are further enhanced by the interplay of Sven’s dark, nihilistic vocals and Claudia’s fresh girlie-appeal.

Westwerk is synonymous with hit tunes that have been stripped down to their bare essentials, breathing the cold air of The Sisters Of Mercy and The Cure whilst featuring the minimalist groove of bands like Joy Division or New Order on a massive, electronic beat foundation. The ambitious mix of minimal electro sounds with meandering guitar and basslines is guaranteed to attract attention from fans of Depeche Mode and She Wants Revenge, too. So, visit those talented Germans on Myspace and prepare to get hooked...
