Greetings from the Nation of Wave! (And mind your head).

CatPeople are back!

A month ago I made a post about a band I've recently discovered. They're called CatPeople and hail from Barcelona, Spain. CatPeople released their debut Reel #1 two years ago and now they're back with their sophomore effort entitled What's The Time Mr Wolf?

Managing to avoid the difficult second album syndrome, CatPeople have made an album that is even better than its predecessor. Forget album fillers, all the tracks really rock this time. Angular guitars, dark ambient synths, violins (!), everything that made Reel #1 a great debut is still there.

If you're into Interpol, Editors or She Wants Revenge and can't wait till their next release, do yourself a favour and buy this album. Definitely in my top-10 list for 2008! You can listen the new tracks from CatPeople's Myspace and judge for yourself.

Heads We Dance ...YEAH!!!!

Leeds based band Heads We Dance write "custom chromed aerodynamic pop" (Losing Today) influenced by Daft Punk, Depeche Mode, Roxy Music, Timbaland and Pet Shop Boys. Taking their name from a Kate Bush lyric, Heads We Dance are inspired by the early sci-fi visions of 'Metropolis', Aldous Huxley and Philip K Dick, and a fascination with love, modern life and the internet. Heads We Dance played their first show at the Dead Disco single launch in September 2006, three weeks after forming, and have since been described live as achieving " an unfathomably glamorous and energetic take on disco pop... damn, it's great to watch" (Tasty fanzine) .

The Transisters

The Transisters were formed in Venice, Italy in 2005. They are a New Wave/Electro/Post-Punk band, blending electronic music with good solid rock riffs. During the past 3 years they've played everywhere in Italy and opened for Kaiser Chiefs, The Raveonettes and White Rose Movement amongst others.

Their Debut LP “Under Control” was released last July by the German netlabel afmusic that the band got in contact with quite simply, through MySpace. “They were impressed by our sound and we decided to work with them, explains Matteo Scarpa, the band’s singer-bass player. Giving music out for free is ok for us, we don’t play for money but because we love it.”

Amidst an Italian indie scene where, according to Matteo, “the average level of quality of bands is not so high”, The Transisters certainly stick out. The band is busy working on their second album at the moment, and plans a future filled with “more gigs and more good songs. We’re positive about it.”

So if you're looking for anxious beats, angular guitars and sober vocals, you're in for a treat. Fans of Joy Division, Bauhaus, Gang Of Four and She Wants Revenge won't be disappointed. The album is available as a free download and you can get it here. And don't forget to check out The Transisters on Myspace!

The Prodigy are back!

The Prodigy blast back with Invaders Must Die! The follow-up to 2004’s Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned features 11 tracks of rock-infused dance mayhem which might just remove your head cleanly from your shoulders. Now, on Invaders Must Die, Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim all feature on the album, which is the first time since the release of Fat Of The Land in 1997.

All fucking bands say their new record’s their best, but this just feels really triumphant for us,Liam Howlett tells Kerrang!. “It’s on fire. It’s all about the three of us together and what we can do. You know what we deal with: it’s beats in a predominantly electronic style and it’s full of fucked -up guitars!

Finding themselves disinterested by the latest crop of rock-slash-dance crossover bands, Howlett feels it’s time to shake things up again. And whilst steering away from collaborations with outside vocalists, a certain Mr. David Grohl climbed back behind the drum kit for the album’s standout track Run With The Wolves. “Dave emailed us to see what we were up to and offered his services,” smiles Howlett. “It was really inspiring. It’s definitely the most venomous track on the album. Keith really goes for it on lead vocals. It’s wicked.

Invaders Must Die will be released on March 2 through Take Me To The Hospital/Cooking Vinyl.

Tracklisting

1. Invaders Must Die
2. Omen

Depeche Mode go spiritual

According to Rolling Stone Magazine #1066, before Depeche Mode began recording their new album, the group’s guitarist and chief songwriter, Martin Gore, went out and bought a bunch of vintage gear. “It’s helped to shape the sound of the album,” says Gore. “The sounds we are making are more akin to stuff we did in the late 1980s, around Violator. That was a real creative high for us.

The group has been recording off and on for their as yet untitled 12th studio album release for nine months in New York and in a studio near Gore’s Santa Barbara, California, home. On its last release, 2005’s Playing the Angel, singer Dave Gahan contributed songs for the first time in Depeche Mode’s 25-year career. So far, he’s given four new songs to this currently untitled set. “I think it’s natural,” says Gore — who was the group’s sole songwriter for most of its career. Gore says it’s too early to discuss specific tracks, but he says the album has a strong spiritual feel. Let's hope that Depeche Mode will not let us down and deliver something as good as Playing The Angel to say the least. They're visiting Athens on the 12th of May and absolute mayhem is guaranteed... Visit the band's website to find out the rest of their upcoming European tour dates.

Degrees

Sorry for being so quiet during the past few days, but I've just got back to Salonica to work for the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and I don't have Internet connection at home (I know, it sucks big time). Anyway, stay tuned for a soundtrack-themed Indie Disco podcast coming up sometime this week (ie. as soon as I manage to upload it). oh, and if you're in town come to Warehouse C by the pier to say hello.

In the meantime pay a visit to myspace.com/degreestranas, and learn about one of Sweden's best kept secrets. They are called Degrees and I'm pretty sure they'll be the next big thing. Degrees are Mikael Jacobson and Rickard Folke, two guys from the darkest Swedish woods in a town called Tranås. They've been been playing music for since they cannot remember but recently they found each other wanting the same thing and decided to put their hearts and brains together (and I'm glad they did). At the moment they're just trying to record songs and get them out to as many people as they can, but hopefully they'll release their debut album really soon. Their tunes are quite dreamy and upbeat (fans of M83 will love them) and they'll surely leave a smile upon your face. To hear for yourselves, visit them at Myspace and leave them a shout out, will you?

The Cold

Many of you might have had enough of my postings about bands that sound like The Cure, Joy Division etc. Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you but there's still more to come as I'm in full Cure mode since the release of the BRILLIANT 4:13 Dream :-)

Anyway, let's talk about The Cold. These German lads have definitely done their homework regarding dark eighties stuff. Hell, even the band's name probably has something to do with "Cold" from Pornography! So, if you're into Pornography/Disintegration-era Cure, Joy Division, a little bit of The Sisters of Mercy (you get the idea) and the like, then you're in for a treat. According to the band's website and with some extra help from babelfish (I know, my German is a bit rusty these days), The Cold were formed in Frankfurt in 1997, doing covers of classical Wave music of the early 80's. Soon they began penning their own tunes and performing them live at festivals like WGT, M' era Luna and Cry for Happiness. They finally released their debut After All in August 2004 which stayed in the DAC Top 10 (German alternative charts) for 5 weeks. Now, 4 years later, the band have just finished recording their sophomore album which will hopefully be out really soon. If it's half as good as their debut, I'll be more than happy! So do yourselves a favour and buy After All either from amazon.de or iTunes. For more info visit The Cold at Myspace.

New single from IAMX! And it's FREE!

IAMX is the solo musical project of Chris Corner (ex-Sneaker Pimps). Corner has repeatedly said that IAMX is very different from his actual, real-life personality and is a kind of quasi "act". Whether an act or not, IAMX's music is primarily concerned with subjects such as outlandish sex, death, narcotic intoxication, bisexuality, decadence, obsession, alienation and vague allusions to politics. Corner currently lives in Berlin where he has found "the spirit to care less about the music industry and take an independent route."

Consisting of highly dark, erotic, 1980s-influenced electro, the debut album Kiss + Swallow was released in 2004 followed by The Alternative two years later. A live album, Live in Warsaw, is scheduled for release on 14 November 2008, as well as a string quartet EP. Chris Corner is currently working on the third proper IAMX album, which should also be expected sometime soon.

The absolutely brilliant new single Think Of England can be downloaded for FREE from http://www.61seconds.de. Go get it NOW! Of course don't forget to visit IAMX on Myspace, or check out their podcast at podomatic.com.

Lets Get Invisible

A new acquaintance for waveradio.gr is this duo with great and full of energy tracks.

They are called Lets Get Invisible and here is what they say about themselves:

"Lets Get Invisible was created by the power teamwork of female/male synth pop duo Katie Pawluk and Lance Lemon about one year ago, though we had no idea what we were doing. Expanding upon the sounds, films and energy of our youth in the 80s, we fell in love with thick bass lines, cheap synths and jem and the holograms. We are based in Providence, Rhode Island/New York, NY.
We are currently working on songs for our debut ep scheduled for release in Spring, as well as a remix compilation. We're also in the process of doing a few collaborations with Futurecop! and some other really big names, so there's a lot to look forward to in the near future".

So, enjoy their music at: www.myspace.com/getinvisible

or simply stay tuned and you'll be hearing a lot from these New York guys @ waveradio.gr

Retrolust

Retrolust is a Californian duo that sashays into your various sensory organs with a vibrant revival of synthpop tweaked with modern electronic elements and salty tongue-in-cheek lyrics. It all started when a post-punk preemie usurped a middle-aged ninja turned 80's pop-wannabee to a make song about a serial killer which immediately topped the charts at Icompositions.com. The unlikely pair got turned on by the attention and continued working together. Within a few months they birthed (with the aid of a generous midwife) their first album Bad Reception, but that wasn't enough for the rambunctious duo. The music kept coming and before 2007 was out, Retrolust had completed two more albums, Pump It and Wired. They had perfected and honed their sound and method and gained a loyal following.

Nearly a year later, Retrolust are back with their fourth album Stereoroids featuring eight tracks of that signature sound everyone has come to love. Fans of Duran Duran, Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode will really dig this exclusively digital release. Here are a couple of tunes to put you in the proper mood... The Organ

The Organ were a Vancouver quintet, formed in 2001 by frontwoman Katie Sketch, born Katie Ritchie. In a short space of time, this all female ensemble gained rapid exposure with the release of their first EP Sinking Hearts in 2002, followed by their first proper album, Grab That Gun two years later. A critical and popular favourite, The Organ wrote melodic and introspective music based on layered interplay between their instrumentalists, drawing comparisons to the underground sound of The Smiths, Joy Division and The Cure.
Although they managed to produce a relatively sizable fan-following and their future seemed very promising, on 7 December 2006 the band released a statement on their MySpace and official site stating that they were breaking up. Now, less than two years after their breakup, the band released one last EP of unreleased material titled Thieves.

NOBLESSE OBLIGE

Ex-London, now Berlin based duo Noblesse Oblige was formed in early 2004 by German songwriter/producer Sebastian Lee Philipp and French performer-cum- songwriter/chanteuse Valerie Renay after meeting at a masked ball in Hoxton during which Valerie was performing a live art show.

Their debut album Privilege Entails Responsibility (the English translation of the band name) was released in the U.K. in 2006. Its eclectic mix of disco punk, sixties French chanson and raw acoustic folklore combined with lyrical wit and dark humour proved an appealing combination among the London hipster crowds. Its first single releases Bitch and Daddy (Don’t touch me there) quickly became indie club regulars throughout Europe.

Having re-located to Berlin in 2006, Noblesse Oblige started working on the follow-up album In Exile, released in autumn 2008 on RepoRecords.
Written and recorded in the band’s own Neukölln music studio, the album is a journey through its writers’ diverse musical tastes and styles, taking influences from gothic horror movies, African tribal tunes and contemporary pop music alike.

The bands flirtation with world music comes to a climax on In Exile. The use of bongos and Latin percussion, strings and brass arrangements to African Masai-tribe samples, combined with analogue electronics and classic guitar and piano instrumentation result in a timeless journey through the bands’ influences in music history.

Having toured and performed with artists including Dresden Dolls, Vive La Fete and Patti Smith among others, Noblesse Oblige gained a notorious reputation for their wild and spectacular live shows. Taking turns in playing guitar, samplers, piano, keyboards and drums or melodica, Sebastian and Valerie blend edgy electronics with a raw live sound that captures the sleazy, ambiguous tension within the duos sensual performance.
From hipster nightclubs in Paris to S&M dungeons in Rome, back to warehouse raves and art galleries of East London, Noblesse Oblige have toured most of Europe and – since their 2007 tour of Brazil – beyond back and forth over the past 3 years, resulting in a steadily growing loyal fan base.

Closely linked to the art world through their regular appearances at international galleries and art institutes as well as Valerie’s own background in theatre and live art performance, Noblesse Oblige count Turner prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans, Porn legend Rocco Siffredi and contemporary composer Michael Nyman among their fans, whilst the band’s more danceable music has been supported by key club DJs such as Mark Moore (S’Express), Erol Alkan and Joost van Bellen.
Remaining members of Leigh Bowery’s cult 80s band Minty asked Noblesse Oblige to re-record its underground hit Useless Man using Bowery’s original vocal takes, which was included on the limited edition of Privilege Entails Responsibility’s second single release Quel Genre de Garcon / Lil’ Dirty.

Noblesse Oblige songs have been remixed by artists including Motor (Novamute), Mona Mur, En Esch (ex-KMFDM) and Musiccargo (Amontillado Music), and their music has been used in several film productions and music compilations as well as international catwalk shows. Their innovative artwork and photography is regularly seen in galleries and printed media, such as the cover of Lydia Lunch’s collection of short stories.
For hip underground director Edwin Brienen’s L’amour toujours, Sebastian and Valerie were asked to star alongside Austrian cult actor Erwin Leder (Das Boot).

N.O. also regularly appear as DJs in the club scenes of Berlin, London and Paris. Between 2005 and 2007 their own club night Caligula was a popular event in London and received positive press attention. It was regularly voted Critic’s choice in London’s Time Out magazine, following a range of successful events that introduced an impressive range of Live acts including Motor (Novamute), Pam Hogg, Cursor Miner (Lo Recordings), Comanechi and Tetine (Souljazz) to name a few.

Besides her work as half of Noblesse Oblige, Valerie is a successful theatre and performance artist who trained with Philippe Gaullier in London and has directed several theatre shows as well as art festival appearances around the world. Recently she has re-emerged in the Berlin art and performance scene as her alter ego Femme Façade.

Sebastian is a music producer with his own Berlin recording studio in which he has most recently worked with The Hidden Cameras and Birol Ünel among others.
