War Tapes, a Los Angeles based post-punk outfit, successfully create epic anthems of angst, blending the attitude and edge of today’s post-hard-core scene with an appealing nod to 80’s darker new-wave and post-punk. Like Interpol and fellow Californians She Wants Revenge, they are inspired by bands such as The Cure, Joy Division andThe Sisters Of Mercy but maintain their own unique identity, combining their alternative, post-punk and new-wave influences into an amalgamation of incredibly addictive songs.
Although War Tapes may lean towards the dark side (which can never be a bad thing, right?), they still manage to marry monstrously dark soundscapes with sing-a-long choruses and huge hooks. Aided by a wall of angular guitars drenched in reverb and a pulsing drum rhythm pumping the blood through its beating bleeding heart, Neil Popkin's baritone vocals make gloom feel gratifying.
Despite releasing their self-titled EP only a few months ago, War Tapes have already toured with the likes of mainstream acts such as Smashing Pumpkins, Shiny Toy Guns and The Bravery and have amassed quite a following in no time. With a debut album in the works, they definitely look like a sure bet for 2009. Visit them on Myspace and get your own copy of War Tapes EP now!
If you have been listening to my show, you should know by now that I'm a big fan of mashups. Now before you ask, a mashup, bootleg or blend (also mash up and mash-up) is a song or composition created from the combination of the music from one song with the a cappella from another. So, a mashup is a song created out of pieces of two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another.
In full swing at the end of the 20th century, mashups have been described positively as "ultimate post-modern pop song" or "culture jamming in its purest form". They have also been described negatively as "the logical extension of the sampling fever of the '80s taken to its dumbest extreme". Due to the questionable legal status of mash ups and little chance of profits "there's a real punk rock attitude attached to the movement". So, love 'em or hate 'em, mashups are here to stay. The mashup scene is really thriving, so why don't you give it a try yourselves? Even I managed to make a bunch of mashups! Anyway, 'nuff said, here are my top 20 mashups of 2008. 2008 was a good year in music. We had great debuts from bands like MGMT and Glasvegas, returns from The Cure, Portishead and The Killers... and of course (believe it or not) Chinese Democracy was finally released (and I liked it)!!! So, here are my top 20 albums for 2008 (and by albums I mean WHOLE albums, not just a couple of catchy singles), along with my top 20 tracks.
The Dark Romantics. The name in ninetieth-century America referred to a literary sub-genre under which names like Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson and Nathaniel Hawthorne fell. These Dark Romantic authors were defined by a pessimistic view of the natural world as a place that is "dark, decaying, and mysterious." These days we know The Dark Romantics as the brainchild of indie rock mavens, Eric Collins (ex Denison Marrs, The Party People) and Dean Paul (ex Denison Marrs, The Party People, John Ralston).
In 2006 the band released their critically acclaimed debut record, Some Midnight Kissin' which drew comparisons to Interpol amongst others. Never resting on their laurels, the band perfected their rollicking guitar-dance-rock sound and demonstrated a relentless work ethic, releasing an iTunes exclusive EP, The Artificial EP, in February 2008, as well as a 7", Lonely Roads (New Granada Records), in May 2008.
And now, Heartbreaker, 13 tracks of dark, sexy, transcendental rock and roll. Building on themes of love, pain and -well- heartbreak, the album boasts the most impressive vocals we've seen from Collins so far, who's been compared to A.C. Newman (New Pornographers) and Thom Yorke (Radiohead). His brooding vox is matched with eclectic instrumentation. An engaging and carefully crafted string section works it's way into the mix as well. "Heartbreaker differs from past records in that it's much more dark, and much more romantic," says Collins, "it's is a complete thought with different dynamics and moods."
To sum things up, if you like the style of The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol and The Strokes you'll absolutely love these guys. Go to their page on Myspace to check out their tunes and concert dates.

Nothing suffocates you more than The passing of everyday human events Isolation is the oxygen mask you make Your children breathe in to survive
But I'm not a slave to a god That doesn't exist But I'm not a slave to a world That doesn't give a shit
And when we were good You just closed you eyes So when we are bad We'll scar your minds
Fight, fight, fight, fight
You'll never grow up to be a big- Rock-star-celebrated-victim-of-your-fame They'll just cut our wrists like Cheap coupons and say that death Was on sale today
And when we were good You just closed you eyes So when we are bad We'll scar your minds
But I'm not a slave to a god That doesn't exist But I'm not a slave to a world That doesn't give a shit
The death of one is a tragedy The death of one is a tragedy The death of one is a tragedy But death of a million is just a statistic
The "brave" policemen who are here to protect us all. Your watching too many Rambo films may prove hazardous to our health.
The politicians that keep on feeding us with lies, sucking our blood like some hip vampires with Armani suits (thank God they come in XXL, too). BTW, does blood have so many calories or they are just FAT?
The ignorant people that keep on voting for them.
The Greek priests that wear more gold than 50 Cent, Jay-Z and Lil' Wayne put together (and do good business, too - if you're looking for some good real estate agency give them a shout).
Every poor Greek guy who has to waste a whole year of his life peeling potatoes and mopping floors in the army (hey, at least he gets 8,90 euros per month).
The TV stations that keep on showing trash on TV.
The idiots who watch this trash. Read a bloody book you retards!
The mob who hide under their hoods and trash everything because they CAN! There are other ways to show how macho you are, you know. Now go home and play TEKKEN or Grand Theft Auto, will you?
Wake up people! KNOW YOUR ENEMY!

According to NME, a DJ based spin-off of the phenomenally successful Guitar Hero game is due out next year. The DJ Hero spin-off has long been rumoured to be in the works by developers Activision, but the cat has apparently been let out of the bag by Dutch techno DJ Tiësto.
A newsletter apparently from the DJ was sent out to fans, saying: "We are proud to announce that Tiësto has teamed up with the game developer Activision and their latest DJ project. I am very excited about this! I think this is a great way to introduce people to DJing. Maybe they realise it's not as easy as they think. I am sure this brings new fans to the scene, dance music is not far from hip-hop for example. Hopefully the music I have composed appeals to all kinds of fans!" However, the DJs reps are questioning the validity of the statement and say that while he has been in talks with developers, his involvement has not been finalised. Anyway, I think we’ll finally get to test out our ‘scratching’ skills on a pair of USB decks real soon!
For those of you that have been living in a different planet, Guitar Hero has been a global phenomenon, selling 23 million units worldwide. It is now in its fourth incarnation, Guitar Hero: World Tour (now I know what to ask Santa for Christmas). What's next then, Activision? Bouzouki Hero anyone?
Cheshire Cat is a Gothenburg-band consisting of four members. Martin Trygg on vocals, Patrik Eriksson and Martin Söderberg on the electric guitars, and Oskar Clase on the synthesizer and programming. They have released two official EP’s so far, "Souls" and "Welcome To Our Town", and are currently working on their debut album.
Drawing from of the original sounds and aesthetics of the post-punk sound and influenced by bands like The Cure, Joy Division and New Order, Cheshire Cat's offerings are an amalgamation of early 80's new wave and melancholic Mancunian post punk, sprinkled with indie pop melodies. If you're into Interpol, Editors and the like watch this band...

Electrocute is a Los Angeles-based electronic rock 'n' roll band. Nicole Morier, from Albuquerque New Mexico, USA, started the band with former member Mia Dime in Berlin, Germany in 2002. They formed a duo motivated by the explosive electro-pop/electroclash music scene happening in Berlin. After releasing one EP (A Tribute To Your Taste) and one LP (Troublesome Bubblegum) on the now defunct Emperor Norton records, Mia left the band. Morier eventually moved to Los Angeles where she met AussieLegs Le Brock and recruited her to Electrocute. Together they bring a mix of electro dance beats, guitars, and what they describe as being a naughty but clever lyrical design.
Electrocute's latest release is the On The Beat EP, produced by Dutch DJ/Remixer Extraordinaire Junkie XL and released digitally through iTunes, Amazon, Napster, etc. If you like Le Tigre, Chicks On Speed, Peaches, Soho Dolls, CSSor any other bands that make highly danceable and super lovable tracks, you've hit the jackpot! Put on your dancing shoes and visit Electrocute on Myspace for some free downloads.

Inspired by band such as Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Libertines and Franz Ferdinand, art-punkers Flakes are a band currently based between London (United Kingdom) and Patras (Greece).
Consisting of Yodashe, flop guitarist Jarvis, flip guitarist Stam, bassist Velli and drummer Nath4niel, Flakes’ music is a mix of angular sonics with pop structures. The band came together and recorded their first demo in 2006, followed by fiery live performances in Greece and the UK during 2007-2008. In July 2008 while being in the studio for the recordings of their debut album “Lick Your Fingers, If You Like It” the band was selected to perform in Exit Festival (Novi Sad, Serbia) for MTV ADRIA’s Live Music Stage. Just a few weeks before, the band had been invited by DJ-producer Dousk to participate as guest musicians in his second album “Kind Of Human” (Klik Records, 2008).
Flakes’ debut album was released in Greece and Cyprus on the 20th of October 2008 by Inner Ear Records. The album features spiky, punk guitars, drumming exhibiting un-typical indie sharpness and screaming, bluesy, provocative vocal worlds that establish the band’s artistic direction trying to merge diverse influences into a hybridized alternative soundscape. Get the album online via Inner Ear’s online store and visit Flakes on Myspace for upcoming tour dates.

Brooklyn based outfit Cruel Black Dove have been making their own brand of dark electronic Lynch-esque rock since 2007. Comparisons to PJ Harvey, Garbage, Placebo, Curve and Depeche Mode aren't inappropriate, but Cruel Black Dove are still a force of their own, full to the brim with infectious sound and fury. Singer Anastasia Dimou has an impressive stage presence and vocal ability that meshes well with the skilled playing of her bandmates.
Although the band only formed last year, if they continue cranking out the darkwave blues numbers, they're sure to be a hit. Full Powers is their debut EP, with a proper album currently in the works. So, if you're looking for a sound full of sex, spite, angst, hurt and revolution, visit Cruel Black Dove on Myspace.
